WEBB WINS BRONZE IN FALMOUTH

13 year old Jake Webb came through a 20 strong field to win the inaugural West of England Billiards a& Snooker Foundation Falmouth Bronze Waistcoat tournament. The tournament main sponsor was Bells Court Snooker Club, practice venue for Professional Snooker player Andy Hicks. Webb defeated George Leakey 2-0 after Leakey had stormed through to the Final without losing a frame all day. In the Semi finals Leakey beat James Eddy and Webb beat in form Daniel Watson, who was also undefeated. The quarter finals was full of close fought matches with Eddy beating Charlie Campbell, Leakey beating Steven Hull, Watson beating Phil Morgan and Webb beating yet another undefeated player Zac Lawson.

In the group stages Steven Hull went undefeated to win group A followed closely by Campbell who pipped Adam Lawson on frame count back. Josh Byrd did the same to finish ahead of Harry Pledger. Group B saw Zac Lawson in great form scoring heavily in all his matches and making the break of the day (27). The second qualifying place went to Morgan. Callum Archer, John Campbell & Jack Vivian fought out the lower placings for valuable ranking points. Watson easily won group C with Eddy in second place. Charlie Martin finished a creditable third and Tamara Williams failed to qualify but demonstrated to the boys that they won’t be having it all their own way in future tournaments, having won one match and got close to wining in the others. Louis Bamford also promised much for the future. In the final group D Leakey and Webb qualified with James Taylor, Jack Pledger & Jack Stevens close behind.

Club Proprietor and Tournament Director Paul Williams gave thanks to the support from the WEBSF officials and went on to say “This is an excellent tournament for our young players to enter. If they perform well they will be rewarded with places in the regional finals which is due to be held later in May this year. Here they will have the opportunity to show that snooker is still very much alive in Cornwall and hold up the tradition of good Cornish players”. WATSON STRETCHES THE PACK

Daniel Watson jump into top spot in the West of England Billiards & Snooker Falmouth Bronze Waistcoat rankings with a fine 2-0 win over Adam Lawson in the final. After just two events Watson has opened up a 420 point lead over joint second place players Steven Hull and Phil Morgan. Watson’s victory came after a consistent days play without dropping a frame. In the semi final Watson beat Charlie Martin and Lawson did well to win a tough match against Jack Pledger. The quarter finals saw close black ball finishes for Pledger who narrowly beat newcomer Jack Franklin and Lawson who just pipped Phil Morgan. Watson beat Steven Hull comfortably as did Martin beat another newcomer Daniel Richards.

Morgan won group A after a shaky start in his first match where he only just beat George Leakey on the black. Pledger qualified in second place easing out Leakey who had no less than four black ball finishes. James Eddy, Jack Vivian & Callum Archer all failed to qualify this time. Franklin proved the surprise in group B by wining the group ahead of Martin on head to head count back. James Taylor, Harry Pledger, Josh Byrd & Aimee Andrewartha made up the group. Watson made a 22 break in winning group C with some good victories. Hull picked up the second qualifying spot only losing the one match against Watson. Zak Lawson, John Campbell & Louis Bamford failed to qualify. In the final group D, Daniel Richards ploughed through the field to win at a canter after a close first match against Emmit Moosa. Lawson equally impressive took second spot losing just one match to Richards. Charlie Campbell, Tamara Williams, Jack Stephens & Emmit Moosa will have to wait until the next event before having another try at qualifying.

Daniel Watson won a second consecutive West of England Billiards & Snooker Waistcoat event to increase his lead in the overall Falmouth rankings. His opponent in the final was Steven Hull whom he beat 2-0. Hull remains in second place just ahead of Charlie Campbell who leap frogged eight places into third spot. James Taylor and Josh Byrd performed well to reach the semi finals for the first time both gaining valuable ranking points. Other ranking table movers include Harry Pledger, up five places, Zac Lawson up six places and James Eddy up five places.

Group A was won by Zac Lawson wining all but one of his matches, second place went to Byrd by virtue of frame count back over the unlucky George Leakey. Tamara Williams came a creditable fourth and newcomer James Lister fifth. Watson powered through the field to win group B, more than doubling his opponents scores in every match. Second place was won by Eddy who just pipped Daniel Richards on frame count back. Charlie Campbell dropped one match against newcomer Jonny Brentow to win group C. Taylor secured second spot edging out losing another newcomer Jacob Chambers. Harry Pledger won group D with ease in front of Hull and Phil Morgan. During the knock out stages there was a misunderstanding of the rules which was adjudicated by Tournament Director Paul Williams in the form of ranking points adjustment to the satisfaction of the players concerned.

Daniel Watson won a third consecutive West of England Billiards & Snooker Bronze Waistcoat event to increase his lead in the overall Falmouth rankings. His opponent in the final this time was Zac Lawson whom he beat 2-0. Lawson jumps from 4th to 2nd place in just ahead of George Leakey who moved up from 6th to 3rd. The biggest mover was Jack Pledger who went from 11th to 6th. It was a good day for the Pledgers that cumulated in Jack beating Harry in the semi finals.

Group A was won by Daniel Watson who went undefeated on the day. Runner-up was Zac Lawson, losing just the one match to Watson. The other qualifiers being Josh Byrd and Phil Morgan. Group B proved a tighter affair with Adam Lawson winning the group by virtue of a single loss. Jack Pledger came in second on frame count back in front of brother Harry and George Leakey.

Jack Pledger gained in confidence throughout the tournament after beating hot favourite Daniel Watson in the group stages as he went on to win his first WESBF Bronze Waistcoat Tournament. In the final Pledger beat ever consistent Zac Lawson. Another good run was had be Charlie Campbell who also beat Watson in the quarters before he ran out of steam against Pledger in the semi finals. Watson, not to go unnoticed made the best break of the day a 32 in the early rounds to head up the ‘Breakmaster’ table. Lawson beat Josh Byrd and Phil Morgan in the Quarter and Semi finals. James Eddy also did well to reach the quarter finals.

Group A was won by Campbell who went undefeated followed closely by Adam Lawson and Harry Pledger. In group B Watson took first place by virtue of taking frames in the matches he lost. After a shaky start where Jack Pledger lost 2-0 to George Leakey, Pledger won all his matches to finish second, third place went to Leakey. Eddy dominated group C followed by Morgan and Jonny Brentow. The final group D saw three players level in first spot before frame count back separated them. Zac Lawson took first spot with Byrd in second and Steven Hull in third place.

The movers in the ranking points table where Leakey up 4 places from 7th to 3rd Hull from 9th to 4th. Watson still heads the table and extends his lead to 860 points and is still the player to beat.

With one event to go Daniel Watson after winning event six in the Falmouth series of WEBSF Bronze Waistcoat tournaments cannot be caught, so is champion elect for 2008. The remaining thirty players are left to battle it out for the other seven qualifying places for the Regional Bronze Finals Day Tournament taking place later this month. Watson beat George Leakey in the final. One to watch out for in future events is Oliver Timmins who in his first tournament reached the semi’s before losing to Leakey. Josh Byrd was Watson’s victim in the other semi final.

Group A was won by Leakey who won all of his five matches. Three players where level in second place and could only be separated on countback. Jack Vivian just edged out David Thomas and Jack Pledger to qualify. Byrd just pipped Daniel Richards for top spot in group B. Zac Lawson won group C winning all his matches with Watson taking second place for once. Harry Pledger ran away with group D amassing 136 points in one frame. Second place went to Timmins who also scored heavily.

WATSON FALMOUTH BRONZE CHAMPION

Daniel Watson won yet another Falmouth Bronze Waistcoat event, making it five out of seven to romp away with the title of WEBSF Falmouth Bronze Waistcoat Champion. Joining him as qualifiers for the Regional Finals on 24th May in Plymouth will be; Zac Lawson, George Leakey whom he beat in this event final, Josh Byrd, Jack Pledger, Steven Hull, Phil Morgan & Harry Pledger.

Group A was won by Byrd wining all his matches comfortably. Harry Pledger took second qualifying spot. Newbie Currow Bascombe finished a creditable fourth. In group B Zac Lawson also won through without dropping a frame followed by Daniel Richards. Hull won group C on frame count-back edging out Jack Franklin into second place and Morgan third.Group D was won by event winner Watson in front of event runner-up Leakey.

Club Proprietor and Tournament Director Paul Williams said “The top eight players in the ranking have all done well to qualify for the Regional Finals. It will be tough competition but I am sure every player will do their best to compete at this level. Hard luck to those that just missed out especially Charlie Campbell and Harry Pledger and Adam Lawson. All is not over for them as all non qualifiers are eligible to enter the Plate competition.”
