LIAM MAKES IT A TRIO OF WELSH CHAMPIONS

Liam Davies from Tredegar made it three in a row for the Welsh when he took the West of England Billiards & Snooker Foundation, Bronze Waistcoat Open Snooker Championship at Jesters Snooker Hall, Swindon. In the final Davies had to overcome another precocious talent, Aidan Murphy from Bristol. The high standard of play and the contrasting styles of the finalists made for compelling viewing. Both players played excellent matchplay snooker but it was Davies that broke away to win the opening frame with the highest break of the day, an excellent 63 break. Murphy’s response in the second was measured and controlled as he crafted an early lead. However, Davies managed to get back within striking distance and snatch the frame on the colours to take the title. In the semi-finals Davies beat Jack Ratcliffe from Swindon who qualified in second place from group A, whilst Murphy beat Shane Kearns from Swindon, who won group B, without dropping a frame. In group A Murphy finished top undefeated, with Davies in second place after losing just one match against Murphy. Another excellent prospect from group A, who could count himself a little unlucky to have been drawn in the same group as the finalists, was Connor Benzey from Eastleigh. Benzey finish in third place after posted a fine 56 break, the highest in the group stages, after the disappointment of not qualifying for the main knock-out stage he went on the win the Plate against Kyle Carter from Swindon.
In addition to the customary trophies, prize money was distributed between the semi-finalists, winners and runners-up. Other prizes included copies of the West of England Billiards & Snooker Foundation approved Coaching Manual and Cue Towels. This event was open to any player under the age of 17 years.

WEBSF Tournament Director Wayne Branton said “It is encouraging to see that the game is in safe hands with the young players here today. The standard of play and the attitude on show was excellent, it was difficult to know who had won or lost without first looking at the score sheets such was the good temperament and enthusiasm of the players.
