SELWAY’S ONLY GONE AND WON THE 3 REDS!
Those were the words, with the odd expletive, of a team mate on hearing that after many years of trying and four near misses, Ray Selway had won the annual Seaton League 3 reds tournament. Ray beat all-comers that included three Chard players before finishing off Neil Wilmington in the final. This year there was the added incentive of prize money for the top four places, kindly donated by Graham Ward & Sons Tiling. Chard Conservative club hosted the event and provided excellent table conditions and superb refreshments. Several big guns went out early yet again, in what is always an enjoyable event bringing the league players together to socialise and reminisce old times.

BROOKSHAW WINS DEREK WALKER CHRISTMAS CLASSIC
Nine billiards players from Cornwall ventured across the Tamar to join two from Somerset and three Devonians in the inaugural Derek Walker Christmas Classic English Billiards tournament, held at the Victoria Snooker Centre, Plymouth, by kind permission of the proprietors. The competition, sponsored by Devon Pasties and organised by the Devon County Billiards and Snooker Association, consisted of four groups playing a ‘round robin’ format with matches of one hour duration, providing eight players to contest the quarter-finals of a knock-out. The six unsuccessful players took part in a plate tournament. In the main tournament three straight wins saw Charlie Gay win Group A with Steve Downing runner-up. Downing recorded the highest break (86) in this group. Group B saw Dave White and Brian Harvey each record two wins with White having the better points difference. Harvey recorded breaks of 103, 71 and 63 against White’s 64. Group C had three players of whom Bill Andress came out on top with two wins and Derek White was runner-up with a single win. Chris Mitchell won Group D with two wins and Steve Brookshaw was runner-up with one. In the quarter-finals, Brookshaw beat Gay, his high break of 103 equalling Harvey’s effort in the group stage. In the battle of the Whites, Dave overcame Derek by 37 points. Andress produced his best result of the day, recording runs of 75 and 42 to narrowly beat Harvey. In another close match, Downing made breaks of 75 and 58 to beat Mitchell by 19 points. The semi-finals had Steve Downing matched against Steve Brookshaw and Dave White against Bill Andress. Downing was well up in his match but Brookshaw produced the highest break of the day (104) to scramble home, while White was always in control of his match against Andress, winning by 138 points. The final was evenly contested with each player making significant contributions and the lead changing hands several times. Brookshaw was the eventual winner with a 253-201 win.

The plate was run as a two-group round robin competition with the group winners contesting the final. The winner was Dave Clue who defeated promoter Derek Walker in the final. Mr. Walker presented the awards and in thanking the organisers and the Victoria Club, hoped that this would be the first of many such competitions.
