NECK MAKES A MOVE ON GOLD
The South West Snooker Academy, at Gloucester has become a ‘Honey Pot’ attracting players eager for a taste of what it’s like to play snooker under world class conditions. One of the WEBSF main aims is to facilitate opportunities for its members to realise their dreams and aspirations. One such aspiration was realised this past weekend when the WEBSF took the Gold Waistcoat Tour to the Academy. Fast running cloths, responsive cushions and tight pocket openings prove unforgiving of a less than perfect technique and lapses in concentration. With a full days snooker ahead of them mental stamina would also play an important part in whittling the field down to two players to compete in the final. Andy Neck, from Newton Abbot and Paul Standen from Braunton proved worthy of the challenge and met in the final. Click here for the outcome and more details on the Gold Waistcoat Tour.

Thanks to all at the SWSA, Gloucester who made everyone welcome and provided sponsorship for the event. A special mention for EASB Referee Nick Harry for his exceptional show of stamina to officiate for over 13 hours on the day!

December 2011 News

BROOKSHAW – MAXIMUM MAN
Steve Brookshaw from Plymouth at the age of 45 years and 23 days could be forgiven for thinking that his days of achieving one of Snookers significant targets was slipping away from him. Having surpassed the 200 break mark at English Billiards some years back is proof that he is indeed a master of concentration and touch, for these are skills one must acquire to make a break of this size at the grandfather of cue sports. However, the 147 Maximum break at Snooker requires precision, nerve and fearlessness, tinged with just a little good fortune. Today, on the 29th December 2011, Brookshaw realised the dream by completing a 147 break at Snooker. He is now, without doubt, a ‘Master Cueman’. Well done Steve.

June 2009 News

WEBSF CHIP & POT PUT
Steve Brookshaw’s prowess on the green baize has been well documented over the years on trophy plaques at both Local and County level. A century maker at Snooker and double century maker at Billiards is a feat achieved by few that wield a snooker cue. Brookshaw affinity to green playing surfaces was further evident as he demonstrated an unrealised talent on the a golf course by winning the annual WEBSF chip ‘n’ put fun day contest. COLE MAKES HIS MARK
Grant Cole (Plymouth) has over the past few years shown promise in both local and regional tournaments but until now he has struggled to take this form to national events. The results over the past week at Pontins, Prestatyn could prove pivotal in Cole realising his potential. After a good show in the Businessland Under 21’s last weekend Cole followed up with a confident performance against quality opposition in event one of the PIOS series of tournaments. With a new found confidence and new cue in hand Cole first disposed of Mitchell Mann 4(54)-2 in round one. In round two Cole repeated this score over 2007 under 21 World Champion, Michael Gorgiou. In the last 32 of the tournament Cole was taken to a final frame shoot-out against James Silverwood but held on to win 4-3. Having reached the last 16 Cole started well against yet another top quality player, Jack Lisowski. Cole was one frame up and in command only to find himself, not just snookered but also angled in the jaws of a pocket. After a couple of close misses from Cole, Lisowski took the frame to level 1-1. This seem to have a positive effect on Lisowski and with his composure back on track went on to win the match 4-1 with breaks of 62 & 100. Cole was disappointed that he didn’t ‘finish the job’ but nevertheless he gained valuable ranking points and more importantly let his peers know he’s no easy draw for future events. For further details go to Global Snooker

HIGHFIELD STYMIES BAIRD & COLE IN BUSINESSLAND
Sam Baird (Halberton) and Grant Cole (Plymouth) reached the final stages of Businessland event 5 at Pontins. After good wins against Lee Page 3-2, Mitchell Mann 3-1 and Danny McCann 3-0, Baird narrowly lost 3-2 on the black against Liam Highfield in the final. With one event to go Baird is top of the overall rankings, 65 points ahead of Highfield. Cole went out in the quarters also against Highfield 3-1, this good run moves Cole into 6th place in the rankings. For further details go to Global Snooker

PROFESSIONAL SNOOKER PLAYER
Sam Baird has won the EASB Pro Ticket Play Offs. The Management Team and Members of the West of England Billiards & Snooker Foundation are very proud of his achievement. Well done Sam!

JAKE STEWART REGIONAL BRONZE CHAMPION
Jake Stewart won through a strong field of qualifiers to win the title of WEBSF Regional Bronze Waistcoat Champion. Stewart from Redruth beat Will Blackmore in the final. Stewart made the best break of the day a 57, just a few short of taking the overall break title which went to Jay Bullen from Exeter who made a fine 64. The finals day brought to a conclusion a total of 24 tournaments played over the season in Redruth, Exeter, Falmouth & Plymouth. Any club wishing to host a WEBSF Bronze Waistcoat tournament or series of tournaments should contact the WEBSF by email (websf_uk@yahoo.co.uk) or by phone on 07850882770.
