WEBSF CHIP & POT PUT
Steve Brookshaw’s prowess on the green baize has been well documented over the years on trophy plaques at both Local and County level. A century maker at Snooker and double century maker at Billiards is a feat achieved by few that wield a snooker cue. Brookshaw affinity to green playing surfaces was further evident as he demonstrated an unrealised talent on the a golf course by winning the annual WEBSF chip ‘n’ put fun day contest. COLE MAKES HIS MARK
Grant Cole (Plymouth) has over the past few years shown promise in both local and regional tournaments but until now he has struggled to take this form to national events. The results over the past week at Pontins, Prestatyn could prove pivotal in Cole realising his potential. After a good show in the Businessland Under 21’s last weekend Cole followed up with a confident performance against quality opposition in event one of the PIOS series of tournaments. With a new found confidence and new cue in hand Cole first disposed of Mitchell Mann 4(54)-2 in round one. In round two Cole repeated this score over 2007 under 21 World Champion, Michael Gorgiou. In the last 32 of the tournament Cole was taken to a final frame shoot-out against James Silverwood but held on to win 4-3. Having reached the last 16 Cole started well against yet another top quality player, Jack Lisowski. Cole was one frame up and in command only to find himself, not just snookered but also angled in the jaws of a pocket. After a couple of close misses from Cole, Lisowski took the frame to level 1-1. This seem to have a positive effect on Lisowski and with his composure back on track went on to win the match 4-1 with breaks of 62 & 100. Cole was disappointed that he didn’t ‘finish the job’ but nevertheless he gained valuable ranking points and more importantly let his peers know he’s no easy draw for future events. With one event to go Baird is top of the overall rankings, 65 points ahead of Highfield. BROOKSHAW WINS DEREK WALKER CHRISTMAS CLASSIC
Nine billiards players from Cornwall ventured across the Tamar to join two from Somerset and three Devonians in the inaugural Derek Walker Christmas Classic English Billiards tournament, held at the Victoria Snooker Centre, Plymouth, by kind permission of the proprietors. The competition, sponsored by Devon Pasties and organised by the Devon County Billiards and Snooker Association, consisted of four groups playing a ‘round robin’ format with matches of one hour duration, providing eight players to contest the quarter-finals of a knock-out. The six unsuccessful players took part in a plate tournament. In the main tournament three straight wins saw Charlie Gay win Group A with Steve Downing runner-up. Downing recorded the highest break (86) in this group. Group B saw Dave White and Brian Harvey each record two wins with White having the better points difference. Harvey recorded breaks of 103, 71 and 63 against White’s 64. Group C had three players of whom Bill Andress came out on top with two wins and Derek White was runner-up with a single win. Chris Mitchell won Group D with two wins and Steve Brookshaw was runner-up with one. In the quarter-finals, Brookshaw beat Gay, his high break of 103 equalling Harvey’s effort in the group stage. In the battle of the Whites, Dave overcame Derek by 37 points. Andress produced his best result of the day, recording runs of 75 and 42 to narrowly beat Harvey. In another close match, Downing made breaks of 75 and 58 to beat Mitchell by 19 points. The semi-finals had Steve Downing matched against Steve Brookshaw and Dave White against Bill Andress. Downing was well up in his match but Brookshaw produced the highest break of the day (104) to scramble home, while White was always in control of his match against Andress, winning by 138 points. The final was evenly contested with each player making significant contributions and the lead changing hands several times. Brookshaw was the eventual winner with a 253-201 win.

The plate was run as a two-group round robin competition with the group winners contesting the final. The winner was Dave Clue who defeated promoter Derek Walker in the final. Mr. Walker presented the awards and in thanking the organisers and the Victoria Club, hoped that this would be the first of many such competitions.
