ROGERS WINS CLASSIC
Michael Rogers won a classic final against Jay Bullen in the second event of the WEBSF Exeter Bronze Waistcoat. The tournament was of the highest standard yet with breaks made by all players, the best a 50 by Rogers in the early rounds.Rogers also now leads the overall ranking table. ANDY HICKS EXHIBITION
Master of Ceremonies and sponsor for the evening Derek Walker opened the evening by introducing Andy Hicks as one of the most talented snooker players ever to emerge from the West Country. This compliment was to be fully vindicated over the following 4 hours as Hicks displayed an awesome talent for potting and break building with consummate ease. Referee for the evening Jeff Fox was flawless in officiating every one of the 17 exhibition frames.

Frame 1:
Peter Beckwith one of the many talented young WEBSF players emerging from Plymouth to face Hicks on the night started well with a couple of good pots before Hicks opened his account with a masterful 121 break to win 128-4.

Frame 2:
Chris Corry also started well before Hicks made quick fire breaks of 48 & 40 to win 108-14.

Frame 3:
Daniel Legassick matched Hicks with some superb safety play followed by a 14 break. A number of near misses from both players ensued before Hicks cleared the colours to win 80-17.

Frame 4:
Adam Lewin like his peers started well before Hicks made a well timed 53 break near the latter part of the frame to win 91-12.

Frame 5:
Cody Hall matched Hicks in the potting department for a short period at the start of the frame amassing a respectful 22 points before Hicks once again cleared to win the frame 88-22.

Frame 6:
Haydon Pinhey the current Plymouth Bronze Waistcoat Champion made an early near miss to let Hicks in for a 49 break, Hicks was soon to return to the table after an uncharacteristic missed pot from Pinhey to clear with a brilliant 83 break to win the frame 132-0.

Frame 7: next up
Tom Vanstone a regular on the Silver Waistcoat tour and keen to make an impression started with some good safety play. However, Hicks sensed Vanstone can play a bit and moved up a gear capitalising on a Vanstone mistake fashioning a consummate 99 break followed by a 34 clearance to win 136-1.

Frame 8:
After the break Chris Coumbe produced some excellent opening safety play before Hicks fired in a rapid 82 clearance to win 99-8.

Frame 9:
Hicks had been given the nod that his next opponent Mitchell Grinsted was more than capable of producing an upset to the ensuing white wash of challengers. After the usual bout of excellent opening safety play Hicks compiled a truly masterful 131 break to win 131-0.

Frame 10:
Hicks showing no sign of tiring gave his next opponent Sam Lloyd little chance as he looked awesome in taking 10 reds and 10 blacks before narrowly missing a difficult pot red to the middle pocket when a possible maximum 147 look on the cards. Frame score 124-1.

Frame 11:
The level of early frame safety play was as good as had been seen all evening until a loose shot from Dale Branton saw Hicks make a superb 126 clearance to win 126-4.

Frame 12:
After 30 practice frames earlier in the day in preparation for the exhibition one could understand if Hicks was to falter. Poor exhibition play is not in Hick’s vocabulary as Dylan Chilcott was to find out. Hicks posted yet another century break, 103, to win 115-8.

Frame 13:
Grant Cole was next up and after a mistake from Cole Hicks broke down prematurely making a 46 break. Cole failed to capitalise on this rare opportunity letting Hicks in for a second bite of the cherry and a 55 clearance to win 109-2.

Frame 14:
Andy Trim came to the table and after a long bout of respectful safety play and some excellent single ball potting. Hicks took the lead with a 42 break going on to win an entertaining frame 68-39.

Frame 15:
Brother of Derek Walker, Jeff did not get much table time as Hicks enthralled the spectators with an incredible 136 total clearance, played at almost a running pace to win the frame 141-0.

Frame 16:
The penultimate frame saw Gold Waistcoat player and Pool champion Michael ‘Daisy’ Day fail to take his chances. There where no beaks of note in the 80-32 win to Hicks. However, Hicks demonstrated some excellent potting with the rest, in fact he never missed any rest shots throughout all 17 frames.

Frame 17:
The final frame saw Hicks amass a break of 83 to beat Albi Morrison 103-6

BAIRD REACHES SEMI FINAL OF BUSINESSLAND AGAIN!
Sam Baird (Halberton), reached the semi-final of the Businessland Under 21 Series for the second time in a row before losing 3-1 to Lee Page. Sam topped the breaks table with two centuries 100 & 103. This puts Sam in second spot in the overall ranking after two events. Grant Cole from Plymouth qualified for the knock-out stages narrowly losing out to Michael Leslie. WALTERS WALKS AWAY WITH WIN

CORNWALL BOUNCE BACK
Cornwall bounced back after last years defeat in the annual challenge match with Devon when they defeated their rivals by 17-12 in the match held in Cornwall.

REIGNING CHAMP WINS EXETER BRONZE
Adam Gallen won the first Exeter Bronze Waistcoat event of the season with a 2-0 victory over Jay Bullen in the final. The tournament was run using the 6+6 reds format which provided some interesting results in the group matches. WEBSF sponsor Pete James of Baulkline Snooker presented the trophies. With the all too frequent news of snooker tables being dismantled and in some cases clubs closing down it’s good to here of a club undergoing refurbishment and investment. Exeter Snooker Club situated behind the market is one such club.

LEGASSICK FIRST TO BENEFIT FROM THE NEW REWARD SCHEME

BAIRD REACHES SEMI FINAL OF BUSINESSLAND

Grant Cole and Kris Vincent both from Plymouth also performed well. Cole reaching the Quarter Finals and Vincent posting the second best century of the tournament a fine 107. ROGERS WINS AT KEYNSHAM
Well done to WEBSF snooker star from Taunton, 13 years old Michael Rogers who came through a forty strong field to win his first Keynsham tournament.

ONE HUNDRED AT FIFTY THREE
For all you snooker players out there that can still remember pocket openings barely wide enough for the balls to pass through, bed-cloth that could double-up as the front room carpet, balls that felt as if they were filled with lead and smoked filled billiard rooms where you could only tell who’s present by the sound of muffled appreciation or clearing of throats after a bad shot, the dream of a hundred break lives on!

Steve Canniford is now the downward side of 50 and has been trying to master Billiards & Snooker since he was 14 during which time he reached County standard at both cue sports. Steve tends to play less these days and is more sought after for his coaching skills and knowledge in helping players of all standards. For Steve hundred breaks at Billiards occasionally come along but the milestone of a hundred break at snooker has always eluded him, not any more!..Steve not only realised the dream when he made exactly 100 in a Seaton League match against John Thomas from Chard Casuals, he also made League history, being the first player to make a hundred break in a league match. A feat not achieved by any player during the leagues 67 years.

When ask to comment Steve replied with a wry smile “Now that the 100 break is done and dusted I suppose a 147 is my next target…..given I can stick around for another 40 years!”

Due to tournament date clashes some of the WEBSF tournament dates have bee changed. Check out the calendar by going to the WHAT’S ON IN THE REGION link at the top of this page. These tournaments are open to any WEBSF members (join on the day) who will be under 21 years old on the 31st December 2008 for the Silver. who will be under 16 years old on the 31st December 2008 for the Bronze. There is no age limit for the Gold. Good Luck!

CORNISH SNOOKER PRODIGY SECURES SPONSORSHIP
Young aspiring snooker prodigy, 10 years old Carl Mitchell is supported by Steve Francis of Booters Barber Shop, Redruth who has given sponsorship towards a new cue and waistcoat. Carl plays for Redruth Royal British Legion in division 2 of the Cornish Mines League. After moving up a division Carl has so far acquitted himself well against older and more experienced opponents. He also reached the quarter finals of the West of England Snooker Foundation Bronze waistcoat finals at Plymouth earlier this year. Father and coach Barry Mitchell is grateful for the sponsorship and will be calling on all his past experiences to keep Carl on the path to success.

WILLIAMS CLEANS UP IN GOLD

BRANTON SILVER MACHINE

IMPORTANT ANOUNCEMENT REGARDING THIS SEASONS TOURNAMENT FORMATS
The WEBSF are considering changing the format for at least the first of this years Gold, Silver & Bronze snooker tournaments or to hold a separate 6-6 tournament, frames will consist of 6 Reds and 6 Colours. It is hoped this short format will produce exciting attacking play as well as levelling the ‘playing field’ giving encouragement to any player capable of making a frame wining 40 break. Entry fees are as last season and at least 80% of the entrance fee will being given out as prize money.

6-6 SNOOKER YES OR NO?
Since the 80’s Billiards & Snooker has gone into a steady decline. County Associations have mostly disappeared, Local Leagues are operating with less teams year on year and in some cases merging with other leagues in order to survive. Clubs are closing or at best reducing the number of tables giving way to American Pool and function rooms. Tournaments that once attracted over 100 competitors and played over two days have either disappeared of operate with a fraction of entrants. The reasons are many fold and in some cases complicated, we all have views on these but rather than debate these at length I would like to focus how we can make our sport more attractive to those still playing competitively or playing for fun and relaxation.

The WEBSF was set up in 2004 in an attempt to arrest this decline and provide a safe and emergent environment that would entice & develop new blood, encourage old players back into cue sports and help improve the few quality players we still have in the region. Over the past 4 years the WESBF has made significant steps towards this aim. However, we must not rest on our laurels and continue to develop and push the boundaries, any suggestions that will help us meet our objectives will be gratefully received.

With regard to the previous statement a proposal for this year is to consider the introduction of 6-6 Snooker into the existing tournaments or as an additional tournament. Other sports have variations along similar lines Rugby 7’s and Cricket 20-20 and in past years long gone many different games have been played on an English Billiard table. The 6-6 format is just 6 reds and 6 colours, playing to the conventional rules for Snooker. This article will hopefully provoke debate and prompt members to respond with comments and suggestions as to what extent this format should be introduced into the WEBSF series of tournaments.

Some of the pro’s:-

A shorter format will produce more attacking play and exciting results
With fewer chances in the frame the better player will not be able to ‘relax’ during the early stages of a frame
With just a 40 break securing the frame this will act to level the ‘playing field’ giving encouragement to a wider range of player standards
More players would be encourage to play in the tournaments
Shorter frame times will give the opportunity for bigger groups of players playing more frames.

Some of the con’s:-

The full range of safety play and tactics would be less evident
Prolonged concentration required to master significant break building will be less practiced
‘Levelling the playing field’ will not give a true measure of ones skill against better opponents
As it is not ‘real’ snooker it could turn better players away
Full snooker match-play is invaluable in preparation for National tournaments (no 6-6 national tournaments)
The 100 break benchmark cannot be achieved with 6 reds.

From the comments that have been received from members this has proved an interesting proposal generating lively discussion. The WEBSF Management Team have taken on board feedback from the members and are now voting on a final proposal to:-

Agree and support a pilot in Redruth and Exeter Bronze providing the majority of players are also in agreement.
Agree to a 6 Reds pilot to take place in this years Exeter Bronze Waistcoat Round Robin stages subject to a majority player approval
Hold a 6 Reds tournament this season
Not introduce this format in the Plymouth Bronze, Silver and Gold tournaments.

Voting results are now in.
The WEBSF Management Team have voted by a majority in favour of the above proposal. We now have to see what comes about from the pilots and allow the players to come to a view as to what extent this format will be used in the future. WEBSF 4 YEARS ON
It was back In September 2004 that WEBSF Patron Ray Reardon M.B.E. (six times former World Professional Snooker Champion) launched the West of England Billiards and Snooker Foundation (WEBSF).

The WEBSF Management Team believe in order to arrest the decline in players turning to cue sports is to encourage more young people to participate at grass roots level. The benefits to the sport long term are obvious, more players being exposed to the sport that will lead to them joining clubs, entering leagues & county competitions and more importantly, less youths walking the streets with ’nothing to do’.The WEBSF offers to visit your club or league and discuss ways in which we can work together to put Billiards & Snooker back on the map, providing opportunities for players to realise their potential and provide enjoyment for all.

For the fourth year running the WEBSF has in place a full calendar of well run and administered tournaments catering for players of all age groups. Tournaments are scheduled to take place in Exeter, Plymouth, Redruth & Falmouth with other locations planned for the near future. Since these tournaments have been available the overall standard of play in the region has steadily increased. WEBSF players exposed to tough competition on a regular basis along with access to a high standard of coaching has been instrumental in a number of them being included to represent England at the World, European and Home International Amateur Championships.

Matt Williams, Kris Vincent, Neil Chiswell, Lee Lamerton, all from Plymouth. Sam Baird (Halberton), Greg Batten & Darren Bond (Tiverton), Andy Symons-Rowe (Tavistock) and Andy Radford & Mike King from Exeter, have all represented their country over the past 4 years. All have expressed gratitude to the WEBSF for providing an environment which has proved invaluable in helping them make their mark in national competition.

In 2007 the WEBSF Management Team in association with Rileys, Plymouth organised and ran the Plymouth International Snooker Channel Island Challenge. This tournament pitched teams from the Channel Islands against teams from South & South West England and Wales. The one day event cumulated in victory for Pontins International. This team was made up of three WEBSF players who are regulars on the national circuit; Matt Williams & Grant Cole (Plymouth) and Darren Bond (Tiverton). Cornwall did the double by winning the Billiards and Junior Snooker. The tournament was hosted by Rileys, Plymouth. A total of 252 frames of snooker and 17 hours of billiards where played on just 15 tables on the day. This is thought to be some kind of record for an international tournament. The tournament was regarded by all as a resounding success.

It’s not just the gifted & talented that have benefited from the sterling efforts of the WEBSF Management Team and Coaches. On a weekly basis there are Coaching Schools in Plymouth, Redruth & Exeter that not only foster and improve local talent but help give the youth an alternative to potentially anti-social behaviour. The WEBSF have developed a Billiards & Snooker coaching scheme that includes a process for training and assessing potential coaches of various grades. The coaching team is now 15 strong, All WEBSF coaches undergo self declaration & Criminal Records Bureaux checks in order to comply with Child Protection requirements and to ensure that the safety and welfare of children & young adults remains paramount at all times. At progressive stages of their development, young players can test their skills & knowledge of Billiards & Snooker as part of the WEBSF Player Assessment scheme. increasing levels of competency form the basis for Bronze through Silver to Gold. Each competency level achieved is recognised with a certificate. Annual Membership of the WEBSF is just £5 for Under U16’s and £10 for Senior players. Non playing officials, coaches & volunteers pay just £10 for life. Each member receives a waistcoat/blazer badge & ID card. Other benefits include access to top quality tournaments, excellent coaches, referees & tournament organisers, the WEBSF also help with obtaining sponsorship, promoting tournaments and fundraising.

Roger Cole spokesman for the foundation said “These are very exciting times for Billiards & Snooker players in the West Country. The sports of Billiards & Snooker have been in steady decline since the golden era in the 80’s. The continued support of respected former World Champion Ray Reardon and the hard work of WEBSF officials and volunteers can only continue to prove beneficial to young and old alike who take pleasure from playing this wonderful sport”.

UNDER 18 BILLIARDS TOURNAMENT COMES TO PLYMOUTH
Event 1 of the EABA Under 18’s Junior Billiards series is coming to Plymouth on Saturday 6TH September 2008. The event takes place at the Victoria Snooker Centre, Plymouth. The WEBSF will be assisting with the running the tournament on the day. A full calendar & entry pack will follow shortly. All you young snooker players that want to have a go at English Billiards should contact Steve or any of the WEBSF Management Team. Coaching in the rules and how to play Billiards is available leading up to the tournament. The event commences 11.00am, registration 10:30am. Entry is £7 for non EABA members. Go on, give it a go!

Unfortunately this event had to be cancelled due to lack of support from players probably not wanting to travel long distances to the Plymouth venue. This is something West Country players have to overcome on a regular basis. Hopefully we can try again in the future.

BOND HAS GOOD RUN IN PONTINS PIOS
Darren Bond from Tiverton made it through to the last 16 of the 2007-8 Pontin’s International Open Series (PIOS) before narrowly losing 4-3 to Noppadol Sangnil. Sangnil plays in the final today Friday 8th against Xiao Guodong. For more information go to Global Snooker Centre. Well done Darren.

Members can now purchase and download photo’s taken at WEBSF tournaments on-line via Snapfish. To enter the site you will require a password. This is obtained by emailing Webpics and proving your identity as a member by quoting your membership number and maybe answering a specific question about yourself. In order to keep the room secure the password will be changed periodically.

NOT JUST A TALENTED SNOOKER PLAYER
Dale Branton it seems has talent beyond the snooker table. WEBSF Tournament Directors where presented with caricatures drawn by Dale at the recent WEBSF Bronze Waistcoat Finals Day in recognition for their hard work. GALLEN 2008 BRONZE CHAMPION

WHERE DID THE PRIZE MONEY GO THIS SEASON
With a total of £2,375 has been paid out in prize money this season it’s been a fruitful year for some. Kris Vincent heads the table with £335.

MINING SNOOKER LEAGUE ANNUAL PRESENTATION & EXHIBITION EVENING
100`s ALL ROUND

100 Snooker players including family and friends attended the presentation evening which took place at The Redruth Club on Saturday 10th May 2008. This year took a different format of a Snooker Exhibition by Professional and world ranked No 21 Stephen Lee; Stephen played a selection of competition winners and entertained the audience with his potting skills and jovial banter, making a 100 break against Youth Champion Rob Charman. Lee also involved the youngsters by inviting them up in turn to pot the black using his cue which went down extremely well with the crowd. The referees for the evening were Mr. Willie Pollard and Mr. John Pawlyn. Lee signed autographs, merchandise and posed for photographs during the interval while everyone enjoyed a superb buffet provided by the lovely Ethel. A raffle raised over £200 and a frame was auctioned off to play Stephen raised another £55. After the exhibition Stephen presented the trophies and posed for more photographs.

The Chairman Willie Pollard kindly donated youth sporting award trophies for all newcomers under 16: A.Wills, A.Gill, B.Isaacs, A.Johns, C. Mitchell, W.Pellow & B.Broad. Thank you to everyone for their generous support, including the Penventon Park Hotel for kindly providing the accommodation for Stephen Lee and some great raffle prizes; to Staples for donating a printer/copier/scanner; to everyone who helped on the night including Sarah, Shaun, Jamie and Troy Lynes (who also bought Stephen’s waistcoat to help raise money for the Paul Hunter foundation; and especially to Paul Wakeling and the Redruth Club for the use of their excellent facilities.

WEBSF PLAYERS ENGLISH CHAMPIONS
Greg Batten (Tiverton) Mike King (Exeter) and Sam Baird (Halberton) representing Rileys, Exeter have won the EASB English Team Championship beating Durham City Snooker Club (David Lilley, Michael Rhodes & David Craggs) 5-2 in the final at the EASB Finals weekend 17th-18th May at the World Snooker Academy, Sheffield. In frame 1 Batten beat Rhodes aided with a 40 Break from Batten to lead 1-0. Frame 2 sawcBaird lose to Craggs after a Nervy start from both players to level the score at 1-1. King lost frame 3 to Lilley after Lilley needed a snooker with the colours left. Score 1-2. In frame 4 Batten beat Craggs in a flawless frame to draw level at 2-2. Frame 5 Baird beat Lilley, Baird was 43 up with 2 reds left only for Lilley to clear for a re-spotted black which he left over the pocket on an awkward safety shot, score 3-2 in Rileys favour. In frame 6 King beat Rhodes, King was 38 behind with 4 reds left, but eventually won on the pink to extend the lead to 4-2. Frame 7 Batten beat Lilley, Batten was 17 behind but held his nerve to clear with a modest 22 to win 5-2. This is the first time the team from Durham have been beaten. They won this event in 2006 and went on to become the World 3 man team Champions in California. Captain King will now take his team to Belgium, to represent England in the European team Championships in March 2009. King and his team came close to winning the event last year but lost 10-8 to German in the semi final. They also may get a chance to represent England in the world 3 man Championships which maybe held in Russia, but nothing has been confirmed yet.

STEWART REDRUTH BRONZE CHAMPION
Jake Stewart completed a clean sweep by wining the final event in the WEBSF Redruth Bronze Waistcoat series beating Alex Wills in the final. Stewart finished top of the overall rankings with Aiden Johns finishing in overall second place. For more details and report go to Bronze Waistcoat.

BATTEN GOLD WAISTCOAT CHAMPION
Greg Batten finished runner-up to Grant Cole in the final event of this seasons WEBSF Gold Waistcoat Tour but this didn’t stop him from stealing the overall title of WEBSF Gold Waistcoat Champion from ranking table leader Kris Vincent in an exciting climax. Brian Harvey won through a strong field to take the West of England Five Counties Billiards Championship.

COLE THREE TIMES A CHAMPION – BRANTON RUNNER-UP
Grant Cole (Plymouth) after wining event 5 is the overall WEBSF Silver Waistcoat Tour Champion for the third time (2003/4, 2004/5 & 2007/8). Runner-up to Cole in Event 5 was Mitchell Grinsted also from Plymouth.

Sam Baird (Halberton), after winning event 4 of the Businessland Under 21 series keeps his rich vein of form going by reaching the Quarter Finals of the 2007-8 Pontin’s International Open Series. Baird just lost out to Liam Highfield 5-4 who went on to win the event 5-2 against Matthew Couch. Greg Batten (Tiverton) won through to the last 32 before going out to Paul Davidson 4-3. BAIRD REALLY IS THE ‘BUSINESS’
Sam Baird (Halberton) doubles up with a another consummate performance against European under 19 champion Stephen Craigie in winning Event 4 of the Businessland Under 21 series at Pontins. Baird beat Kishan Hirani, Alex Taubman, Zak Richardson and Kyren Wilson on his way to the final and is now placed third in the ranking despite of only playing in 3 of the 4 events to date. Baird is just 10 points behind Darren Bond (Tiverton) who made it through to the last 16 this time, and Graigie who tops the ranking by a further 120 points. Other good performances came from Darren’s older brother Adrian Bond who just lost to Cragie 3-2 in the quarters and Dale Branton (Plymouth) who took a frame off Cragie in the Quarters. Grant Cole (Plymouth) also qualified. Anyone wishing to sponsor any of these promising players contact the WEBSF to find out more.

BAIRD AND BOND STILL THE ‘BUSINESS’
WEBSF players Sam Baird (Halberton) and Darren Bond (Tiverton) continue to set the bar for their peers to aspire too in Event 3 of the Businessland Under 21 series at Pontins. Baird Beat Bond 3-1 in the semi final and then went on to go avenge Bond’s previous defeat at the hands of Stephen Craigie in event 2. Baird wining 3-1 in the final. Darran Lock (Seaton) narrowly lost in the final of the Plate.

GALLEN EXETER BRONZE CHAMPION
Michael Rogers came from one frame down to beat Adam Gallen 2-1 in the final event the Exeter Bronze Waistcoat but it was not enough to prevent Gallen from overtaking Will Blackmore in the ranking table to secure the Exeter WEBSF Bronze Waistcoat Championship. COACH REACHES LAST 16
Steve Brookshaw (Plymouth) Billiards and Snooker Coach has reach the last 16 in the English Amateur Billiards Championship. Brookshaw qualified from the South Area. Brookshaw will attempt to finish the job in Derby. All at the WEBSF wish him well.

Update: Steve came up against an in-form Martin Goodwill in his first match…..there’s always next year!

Bells Court Snooker Club, Falmouth hosted the first in the Falmouth series of WEBSF Bronze Waistcoat Tournaments on Sunday 10th February 2008. This is the latest club to join clubs in Plymouth, Exeter & Redruth who also host Bronze Waistcoat Tournaments in an effort to find the best under 16 snooker player in the West of England.
